The water-based adhesive is mainly composed of a polymer, a water-soluble resin and the like, and water is used as a solvent, and the odor is small, and the environment is non-toxic. With the continuous improvement of people's environmental awareness, water-based adhesives have become the mainstream of the market in recent years.

In practical applications, some packaging and printing companies lack sufficient knowledge of water-based adhesives, which causes some quality problems. Among them, the problem of “hard bonding” of water-based adhesives is one of the technical bottlenecks that plague many packaging and printing enterprises. In order to let more packaging and printing companies understand the water-based adhesives, the author will elaborate on the characteristics and choices of water-based adhesives, hoping to give some inspiration to the industry.

Waterborne adhesive characteristics

1. Applicable substrate

No adhesive is omnipotent. An adhesive is only suitable for bonding certain materials or certain types of materials. At present, water-based adhesives are mainly used for bonding between polishing paper/paper, PET/paper, BOPP/paper, PVC/paper, plastic/plastic and other substrates.

2. Inherent characteristic

Each aqueous adhesive has its "intrinsic properties." The intrinsic properties of water-based adhesives mainly include appearance (product appearance and film appearance), solid content, density, pH value, solvent ratio, open time, high/low temperature resistance, initial viscosity, and curing viscosity. The bonding method of water-based adhesives is generally divided into three types: machine adhesive, hand adhesive, mechanical adhesive and hand adhesive. Different bonding methods correspond to different inherent characteristics. For example, when the machine is used, the water-based adhesive is required to have a short opening time; when the hand is used, the water-based adhesive is required to have a long opening time; when the film is bonded, the film is required to be flexible and has a high curing viscosity. In terms of high/low temperature resistance, the water-based adhesive is required to be baked at 60 ° C for 72 hours, and then frozen at 10 ° C for 72 hours, the bonding strength is unchanged, no degumming, and the film is brittle.

3. Advantages and disadvantages

The advantage of water-based adhesive is that water-based adhesive belongs to the emulsion system, so its viscosity does not change with the change of polymer molecular weight, and it is environmentally friendly, non-flammable and easy to clean. The disadvantage is that due to the addition of various emulsifiers, stabilizers, pH adjusters and anti-cold antifreeze agents to the water-based adhesive, it will cause certain pollution to the environment. In addition, the water-based adhesive volatilizes slowly, the initial viscosity is poor, the price is high, the wettability to the plastic film is poor, and it is easy to rust the device.

Waterborne adhesive selection

1. Application indicator

Some packaging and printing companies report that some water-based adhesives will degumming soon after they are glued; the viscosity is unstable, sometimes it is firm and sometimes it does not stick; in the case of hot weather, the application is good, but in the weather It can't be applied in cold conditions.......... In fact, this is due to insufficient understanding of the application of water-based adhesives.

Different types of water-based adhesives have different preparation methods and production processes, so their chemical and physical properties are also different, that is, the application indexes are different. The author believes that the most important application indicators of water-based adhesives in the packaging and printing industry include bonding strength, high/low temperature resistance, moisture resistance and stickiness. Defects such as poor adhesion, degumming, and brittleness of the film that are often encountered in practical applications are basically caused by the failure of the above four application indicators.

2. Value for money

When selecting a water-based adhesive, the principle of “quality first, price second” should be adopted. However, some packaging and printing companies have a very lopsided view. They mistakenly believe that the higher the price of water-based adhesives, the better the quality; on the contrary, the worse the quality. In fact, this is not absolute. The author believes that when choosing a water-based adhesive, it is first necessary to understand the characteristics of the processed product and choose a higher cost-effective adhesive. This is a reasonable way to purchase.
