New 3D printing method: permanent shape retention

OFweek 3D Printing Network According to Plastics Today, researchers at Georgia Tech, Singapore University of Technology and Design (SUTD) and Xi'an Jiaotong University in China created print components by printing shape memory polymers. There are different reactions when heated. This technology is suitable for multi-domain application requirements and is expected to be commercially available.

Professor Jerry Qi said that researchers use differences in the properties of materials to facilitate shape changes. The second shape can be designed by placing the two materials in different spatial locations and setting the printing parameters.

He also said that although other 3D printing methods can change shape, once the environment changes, these objects will return to their original shape. The novelty of the new method is that the object retains its shape even after the environment changes. Moreover, the method is easy to operate and implement, which means that complex deformations can be completed more efficiently.

Currently, the tools used by JerryQi's team are commercial printers, which limits their material choices. JerryQi said that he hopes to have more materials for the team to choose for better R&D. At the same time, researchers are working hard to integrate the method into formal design tools.

“We are also exploring potential applications for developable structures and equipment,” said JerryQi. “We are also open to industrial cooperation, enabling our research to be applied to practical industrial applications.”
