BBC reporter missed the safest drone 3D printing to save the field

For BBC reporter Jen Copestake, this is a bit of awkward moment. At the CES 2016 scene on Saturday, Copestake is reporting on a very interesting drone Fleye designed by Belgian startups and introducing it as “the safest drone in the world”. The most unique thing about Fleye is its spherical design. The closed outer casing holds the propeller inside, and looks like a floating ball. According to Tiangong, Fleye is currently conducting crowdfunding on Kickstarter. According to the development team's description on the crowdfunding page, Fleye is as safe as a football, regardless of its size, shape and weight.

While Copestake spoke to the camera about the safety of Fleye, there was a sudden accident. At the time, Fleye floated in front of her, creaking, Copestake reaching out to grab it, and introducing the spherical shell that uses foam to allow humans to interact safely with it. But when Copestake's hand tried to catch Fleye, the float suddenly got out of control and hit the ground and broke into two. (Please see the video below:)

Fortunately, most of Fleye's prototypes are 3D printed, so it's easy to fix. The injured drone was quickly taken to the CES venue and repaired by a Fleye team staff using a 3D printer, and then returned to the camera with Copestake. According to Copestake, the accident that just happened just proves how safe Fleye is.

"(This incident) shows that the safety design of this drone and the closed propeller are really good, I am not afraid that she will hurt me," she said.

According to Fleye's development team, although its prototype is 3D printed, the final product will consist of more robust injection molded parts. On the Kickstarter page, the development team claims that Fleye has enough strength to withstand impact without damage. Although they never mentioned anything like a crash, Copestake seemed to have inadvertently made a beta tester to help them find a weakness.

It should be noted that although it has experienced a crash, Fleye's reputation does not seem to be fundamentally affected. Fleye's crowdfunding on Kickstarter ended in four days, raising more than 277,000 euros, exceeding its original fundraising target of 100,000 euros. According to the plan, the development team will enter the full production phase after the end of crowdfunding, and will be rigorously tested before it is officially shipped in September 2016.
