Polyurethane boom in Asia drives development in China

It is understood that German chemical giant BASF is joint venture with Huntsman Corporation, Japan Polyurethanes Corporation, and five Chinese manufacturers to build a new MDI plant in Shanghai with a capacity of 160,000 tons per year. It is currently in the implementation stage and is expected to be in 2004. Put into production. The project includes supporting nitrobenzene and aniline plants and related polyurethane joint ventures. In addition, BASF will also set up a joint venture with Chinese companies to build a 130,000-tonne TDI plant.

At present, the global MDI and TDI markets are almost controlled by companies such as Bayer, BASF, Huntsman and Dow Chemical. In 1999, the polyurethane raw material market in the Asia Pacific region (excluding Japan) was 1.4 million tons, accounting for about 1/6 of the world's total. It is expected that the rapid growth will reach 2.2 million tons in 2004, accounting for 1/5 of the global scale. The recent expansion of these companies in the Asian market will set off a new wave of investment in the Asian polyurethane market.

The polyurethane foam industry in China has been developing for more than 40 years. The current annual output has reached 400,000 tons, accounting for more than 60% of the total polyurethane output. The annual output of soft foam polyurethane is 260,000 tons and that of rigid polyurethane is 160,000 tons. According to the resolution on the disabling of the Freon foaming agent at the Copenhagen International Conference, China must speed up the search for alternatives and achieve full replacement as soon as possible. At the same time, we must develop high-flame retardant, low-smoke polyurethane foams, strengthen the development and application of structural foams and high-capacity foams, and provide strong support and guarantee for the development of various industries in the new century.

The domestic production of polyurethane foam began in the late 1950s. By the mid-1970s, there were only 10 manufacturers and the production capacity was approximately 15,000 tons/year. The actual annual output was approximately 3,000 tons. In the past 10 years, China's polyurethane raw materials, auxiliaries and products have developed rapidly, and 180 to 200 sets of advanced foaming equipment have been introduced, which has substantially increased the production capacity and annual production of foam plastic products, and has increased the production capacity to 20 More than 10,000 tons/year, the average annual growth rate of polyurethane foam is 20%~30%. The actual output in 1994 was about 100,000 tons, the annual consumption of soft foam was about 60,000 tons, and the hard bubble was about 40,000 tons. In 1999, the output of polyurethane foam in China reached 195,000 tons, including 120,000 tons of soft foam and 75,000 tons of rigid foam, and the annual apparent consumption was 193,000 tons. Soft foams and semi-rigid foams are mainly used for furniture cushions, trims, car mats, carpet underlays, garment linings, building acoustics, sports mats, and mattresses and instrument packaging. Polyurethane rigid foam is mainly used in the refrigerator and cold storage industry for insulation and thermal insulation materials, accounting for 57.5% of the total consumption of rigid foam; thermal insulation for oil transmission pipelines, chemical storage tanks and industrial equipment accounts for 15%; for building thermal insulation, Sound absorption, decorative materials, and activity rooms accounted for 10%; thermal insulation for transportation accounted for 10%; others accounted for 7.5%.

The gap between China and developed countries is that the foreign hard foam is mainly consumed in the construction industry and accounts for more than 50% of the consumption of rigid foam; most of them are used in refrigerators and cold storage, and insulation for the construction industry is still in the initial stage. Due to the rapid development of the automobile and motorcycle industries, it provides opportunities for the development of the polyurethane foam industry, and its potential market is also very broad. At present, the demand for polyurethane foam in China has reached 350,000 to 400,000 tons/year.
